Earth rotates on its axis from West to East. In about every 2 hours a new sign rises in the east and is called lagna or Ascendant.

HOROSCOPE: Hora + Scopos i.e. hour and observe horoscope is a chart that shows ascendant of planets in various signs at the time of birth.

1. North Indian : has 12 houses marked I to XII. Ascendant is always in the first house at the top order of Signs follow the anticlock wise direction. e.s. ASC is Sagittarius, 9th sign of the zodiac, 2nd house has 10th sign Capricorn and so on. Houses are fixed but signs vary depending upon ASC. Signs are written as 1 to 12. house numbers I to XII are not written as houses are fixed.

2. South Indian Horoscope : Signs are fixed but houses vary depending on ASC. ASC is marked as two traverse lines || or lagna or L or ASC.. ASC is the 1st house and remaining houses appear in clockwise order. Signs are not written as signs are fixed.

3. Western Horoscope: Round chart with 12 houses marked in it. The cusp of the 1st house or ASC is beginning of 1st hosue. Counting of houses (as well as signs in it) is done in anticlockwise order.

In Traditional Indian Astrology cusps or longitudes of the houses are middle points. A house begins 15° behind and extends 15° ahead. Middle point or Sandhis are most sensitive points. Western Astrologers follow Sayana. Indians follow Nirayana. To convert Sayana to Nirayana Subtract Ayanamsha of the year of the birth.
